Embracing the Emerald Isle: 5 Weeks of Family, Fun, and Irish Adventures

Updated: Jun 7

Hey there, wanderlust enthusiasts! If you're in the mood for a tale of picturesque landscapes, warm family reunions, and the occasional rain shower, then you're in for a treat. Join me as I reminisce about our unforgettable five-week adventure in Ireland with my husband Andrew, and our spirited daughter Luna.

Ireland has always been special for us to visit, but this time, we decided to make it extra special by spending quality time with our Irish relatives. With five weeks to spend there, we packed our tents and rain gear into a rental car for the ultimate adventure.

Our first stop? Dublin, of course! The vibrant capital welcomed us with open arms and pints of Guinness. We explored the historic Trinity College, marveled at the grandeur of Dublin Castle, and enjoyed trad music at The Cobblestone. Our daughter was particularly enthralled by the performers on Grafton Street, and the colorful storefronts adorned with Irish paraphernalia. She even had a street performer dedicate a song to her - a memory she will cherish I'm sure! We spent our time here staying with family in Raheny. We spent a lot of time at St. Anne's Park and of course every local café we could find.

During our time in Dublin, we hiked Howth Cliffs, celebrated Luna's Birthday, toured Malahide Castle, did a Viking Splash Tour, and explored all the local beaches. Don't forget to take the Dart to Dalkey, a charming Irish village with bathing areas if you're brave enough for a freezing dip! If you decide to visit the Howth Cliffs, this is a great teaching opportunity about the EIRE sign there. From 1942 onward, numerous large white signs were constructed around the Irish coast indicating the word “Eire” along with the designated number of the lookout station nearby. The stone signs were meant to signal to pilots that they were entering into neutral airspace. But in practice, these signs were extremely useful to the Allies as general navigation aids. They were especially helpful in enabling pilots to avoid accidentally landing in Ireland, which would result in their internment. If you are travelling and homeschooling children, Ireland will offer plentiful opportunities to learn.

We also visited the Wicklow Mountains- a stop not to be missed! Nestled just south of Dublin, the Wicklow Mountains offer a playground of rugged peaks, tranquil lakes, and lush forests, making it the perfect destination for a family-friendly adventure. Armed with snacks, water bottles, and a hefty dose of enthusiasm, we set off on our expedition, determined to conquer whatever trails lay ahead. Our mini adventurers couldn't resist scrambling over moss-covered rocks and pretending to be intrepid mountaineers scaling Everest (albeit on a slightly smaller scale!). Of course, no family hike would be complete without a well-deserved picnic break. We found a cozy spot overlooking a shimmering lake, where we feasted on sandwiches, fruit, and of course some Tayto crisps. As we refueled our bodies, we also took the time to soak in the tranquility of our surroundings, and skip some rocks together on the lake. So, if you're looking for a family-friendly outdoor excursion that promises fun, laughter, and a healthy dose of fresh air, look no further than the Wicklow Mountains. With its scenic trails and endless opportunities for adventure, it's the ultimate playground for kids of all ages. Trust me, you won't regret it! Be sure to stop at Turquoise Café on your way back to Dublin for some great plant-based options.

Before continuing our Irish journey, we decided to take a Ryanair flight for a two day whirlwind tour of iconic landmarks and hidden gems in London, UK. How could we resist when flights are around $50 each with return? We walked for at least nine hours each day, and although exhausting, we feel like we made the most of our short visit.

After a very late return from London, we got a few hours of sleep and then rented a car to start the great Irish journey! Fueled by caffeine and a sense of adventure, we continued our journey southward, eagerly anticipating our destination: the legendary Rock of Cashel. Perched atop a limestone hill, this ancient fortress-turned-monastery is steeped in history and shrouded in myth, making it a must-see destination for any traveler to Ireland. Stepping through the gates of the Rock of Cashel felt like stepping back in time. We wandered amidst the crumbling ruins of medieval towers and ornate Celtic crosses, soaking in the rich tapestry of history that surrounded us. From the majestic Cormac's Chapel to the hauntingly beautiful Round Tower, every corner of the Rock whispered tales of centuries past. We were lucky enough to have a sunny day, where we could relax in the grass and watch the sheep grazing around us. Before leaving we enjoyed some soup at Granny's Kitchen - a cute restaurant near the bottom of the road with a cozy outdoor seating area.

After the Rock of Cashel, it was time to head to Killarney, where we would spend three nights camping and exploring county Kerry. We camped at at Fleming’s White Bridge RV and tent park. The facilities there are wonderful! It's clean and cozy with warm showers, a game room, and a kitchen. Do not miss out on all of the live music happening at the pubs in Killarney! We enjoyed our dinner at Bricín Restaurant and Boxty House, where they had a delicious vegan boxty option. During our time in county Kerry, we drove the ring of Kerry, took a ferry to Valentia Island, drove the Dingle Peninsula, and visited Muckross House, Garden's and Traditional Farms in the National Park. Don't forget to walk to the Torc Waterfall while you are there.

After camping in Killarney, we headed up the coast to Galway. We spent a night at the Maldron Hotel in Oranmore. This was a nice break with comfortable beds and hot showers after visiting the legendary Cliffs of Moher. We decided to visit the cliffs at sunset for the ultimate experience, and the lack of other tourists. As the sky ignited in a blaze of fiery hues, the cliffs were bathed in a warm, golden light, casting long shadows that stretched out across the landscape. Seabirds wheeled and soared overhead, their cries echoing in the salty breeze, while far below, the waves crashed against the rocky shore with a rhythmic symphony. Time seemed to stand still as we stood on the edge of the world, mesmerized by the beauty unfolding before us. The cares of the world melted away as we basked in the tranquility of the moment, feeling truly connected to the ancient land beneath our feet.

After a good sleep, we continued on to Connemara. I want to share a little tale of our rainy day adventure to the enchanting Kylemore Abbey in the heart of Connemara, Ireland. So grab your umbrellas and let's dive into a day filled with misty mountains, hidden gardens, and a touch of Irish charm. As we wound our way through the mist-shrouded mountains of Connemara, the landscape took on an ethereal beauty that was impossible to ignore. Emerald hillsides gave way to cascading waterfalls, and moving white specs that turned out to be sheep. Finally, we arrived at Kylemore Abbey, a fairytale castle nestled amidst the rolling hills and shimmering lakes of the Connemara countryside. Despite the rain, there was a sense of serenity that enveloped the estate, as if the weather had only served to enhance its mystical charm. As we reluctantly made our way back to the car, rain-soaked but smiling, we couldn't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to experience Kylemore Abbey in all its rainy day glory. After all, it's not every day you get to explore a fairytale castle amidst the misty mountains of Ireland. So here's to embracing the unexpected and finding beauty in the rain. Cheers to rainy day adventures!

It is now time to head to county Donegal! This was the most exciting part of our journey, as we rented a countryside Airbnb to enjoy for four nights with our Irish family. This was for sure the highlight for Luna, as she got to spend every day and night with her cousins. We started our Donegal adventure by stopping at Bundoran Beach. We got another sunny day and enjoyed some tea and baked goods while lying in the sand. Yes, another sunny day! According to our friends who live in Donegal, we brought the sun with us because they hadn't seen it for a while! After Bundoran Beach we drove a bit further on down the road to Tullan Strand Beach. This beach was definitely a favourite for me with the long sandy walk, and rolling sand dunes in the background. We really enjoyed watching all the surfers here. If you're brave enough to get in the cold water and try some surfing (with a wetsuit of course), they have rentals set up in the parking lot.

Hidden along County Donegal's rugged coastline lies a natural wonder: the Slieve League Cliffs. Among Europe's tallest sea cliffs, they boast breathtaking views and a rich history steeped in myth and legend. Journeying to Slieve League is an adventure, with winding roads offering stunning vistas. Once there, be prepared to be awestruck by cliffs rising over 600 meters (1,972 feet) above the Atlantic Ocean, their sheer size and rugged beauty captivating all who visit. Hiking trails offer unforgettable experiences, catering to both seasoned adventurers and casual strollers. Whether you seek adventure or serenity, the cliffs provide a haven, where the salty breeze and cries of seabirds create a timeless atmosphere.

Don't miss the chance to visit this natural masterpiece, where the beauty of Ireland's northwest coast is on full display. Let the Slieve League Cliffs enchant you and leave an everlasting impression on your soul.

Now on to our next stop! Welcome, fellow wanderers, to a tale of majestic mountains, tranquil lakes, and the timeless allure of Glenveagh National Park & Castle in County Donegal. Join me as we embark on a journey through this enchanting wilderness, where history and nature intertwine to create a landscape of unrivaled beauty. Nestled amidst the wilds of Donegal, Glenveagh National Park beckons adventurers with its rugged terrain and rich biodiversity. Our journey begins at the park's entrance, where we're greeted by sweeping vistas of heather-clad hills and shimmering lakes that stretch as far as the eye can see. We lace up our hiking boots and set off along the winding trails, eager to discover the hidden treasures that await around every bend. Our first stop? The crown jewel of Glenveagh – its magnificent castle. Perched atop a hill overlooking Lough Veagh, this fairytale fortress exudes an air of grandeur and mystery that is impossible to ignore.

But it's not just the castle that captivates us – it's the natural beauty that surrounds it. We meander through lush gardens bursting with color, pausing to admire the delicate blooms and fragrant blooms that thrive in this rugged landscape. The air is alive with the sound of birdsong and the gentle rustle of leaves, a symphony of nature that soothes the soul. So, if you ever find yourself yearning for adventure and craving a connection to nature, make your way to Glenveagh National Park & Castle. Whether you're a history buff, a nature lover, or simply in search of a peaceful retreat, this hidden gem has something to offer everyone. This is a great opportunity to do some homeschooling activities!

Just to make sure you get the most out of your day, make sure to stop at Donegal Boardwalk Resort and take a relaxing walk to the beach. We had a veggie breakfast at the restaurant before heading down to the beach. Make sure you keep an eye on the tide, it came in fast for us and we had to take a quick walk back to keep our feet dry! Please make sure if you visit this beach, you keep your little ones close by.

Our time in Donegal may be coming to a close, but we saved the best for last with a jam-packed final day exploring Fanad Lighthouse, Portsalon Beach, and Tramore Beach. Join us as we wrap up our adventure with a bang! First up, Fanad Lighthouse. Now, I'll admit, as someone who's scared of heights, the thought of climbing to the top was a bit daunting. But with a little courage (and maybe a few deep breaths), we made it! And let me tell you, the view from the top was absolutely worth it. Plus, they have this awesome virtual reality experience that dives into the history of the lighthouse – a hit with both the kids and the adults!

Next stop: Portsalon Beach. After working up an appetite conquering the lighthouse, we treated ourselves to some classic chipper fare and veggie burgers while the kids (and, let's be honest, the adults too) frolicked in the sand. It was the perfect way to unwind and soak up the salty sea air. But wait, our adventure isn't over yet! We wrapped up our journey in Donegal with lunch at The Strand Road Pub near Tramore Beach, where we had the pleasure of catching up with Andrew's childhood friend. Let me tell you, this pub is an absolute gem – the food is delicious (I highly recommend the superfood bowl!), and the atmosphere is unbeatable. And speaking of unbeatable views, don't forget to take a stroll or drive to Tramore Beach afterward. The sight of the mountains against the backdrop of the sea is simply breathtaking. And apparently, the kids didn't mind the cold because they wasted no time jumping into the water!

Now, I'd be remiss if I didn't mention the little hiccup we encountered with some mischievous beach visitors tossing the kids' shoes into the water. But hey, it was all part of the adventure, right? Despite that minor inconvenience, this day easily ranks as one of our favorites from our time in Donegal. As our journey in Donegal comes to an end, we're filled with gratitude for the memories we've made and the experiences we've shared. Donegal, you've stolen a piece of our hearts, and we can't wait to return someday soon.

While our journey around Ireland may be drawing to a close, fear not – we've still got one epic day of exploration ahead as we venture into Northern Ireland for some more breathtaking views on our way back to Dublin. So buckle up, because we've got a jam-packed itinerary that's sure to leave you in awe!

First up on our Northern Ireland adventure: Benone Strand Beach. With its sweeping coastline and golden sands, this beach is a true hidden gem. We kicked off our day with a leisurely stroll along the shore, breathing in the salty sea air and soaking up the stunning scenery. It was the perfect way to start our day of exploration.

Next stop: Dunluce Castle. Perched dramatically on the cliffs overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, this medieval fortress is straight out of a fairytale. We wandered through its ancient ruins, imagining the lives of its former inhabitants and marveling at the sheer grandeur of its surroundings. It's a sight you truly have to see to believe.

But wait, there's more! Our final destination: The Giant's Causeway. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is one of the most iconic landmarks in Northern Ireland, and for good reason. As we made our way down the rugged path to the causeway, we were greeted by the sight of thousands of hexagonal basalt columns stretching out into the sea – a natural wonder unlike anything we'd ever seen before. We spent hours exploring the causeway, climbing over the ancient stones and marveling at the beauty of the surrounding cliffs. It was a truly awe-inspiring experience that left us feeling humbled by the power of nature. If you are able to stop here, please don't miss it. A little tip to save some money as well... you can park at the railway museum for $10 and walk up to the top for free rather than paying for the visitor experience.

As the sun began to set on our adventure, we reluctantly made our way back to Dublin, our hearts full of memories and our minds buzzing with the wonders we'd seen. Our journey around Ireland may be at an end, but the spirit of adventure lives on in our hearts. Ireland had woven its magic around us, leaving an indelible mark on our hearts. Saying goodbye to our relatives was bittersweet, but we departed knowing that we had forged memories to last a lifetime. To Andrew, Ireland will always be home. Perhaps one day we will all call Ireland home.

So, if you ever find yourself yearning for an adventure filled with laughter, love, and a touch of Irish charm, pack your bags and head to the Emerald Isle. Who knows, you might just discover a piece of your heart nestled amidst its verdant landscapes and friendly faces. Sláinte!

Slán Go Fóill, Ireland. Until we meet again.
