Making Memories: Unplugged Family Travel Activities for the Digital Age

Updated: Mar 6

In today's digital age, it's easy to get caught up in the constant stream of notifications, emails, and social media updates. But when it comes to family travel, it's important to unplug and focus on making memories that will last a lifetime. Here are some fun and creative activities to inspire your next unplugged family adventure.

1. Play Old-School Games Remember the days of road trips filled with car games like "I Spy" and "20 Questions"? Bring back the nostalgia and introduce your kids to these classic games. Not only do they provide entertainment, but they also encourage conversation and interaction.

2. Get Crafty Bring along a simple craft project that your family can work on together during downtime. This could be anything from coloring books to scrapbooking to knitting. Not only will it keep everyone occupied, but it will also give you a tangible keepsake from your travels.

3. Try Geocaching Geocaching is a real-world treasure hunt where participants use GPS coordinates to find hidden containers (or "caches"). This is one of our top favourite family activities! It's a fun way to explore new areas and get some exercise while you're at it. Plus, it's a great way to teach kids about navigation and coordinates.

4. Have a Photo Challenge. Challenge your family to take creative photos during your trip. This could be anything from a scavenger hunt-style list (find a yellow flower, take a picture of a street performer, etc.) to a specific theme (architecture, nature, food, etc.). At the end of the trip, have everyone share their photos and pick a winner.

5. Take a Hike Get outside and explore nature with a family hike. Not only is it a great way to get exercise, but it also provides a chance to disconnect and enjoy each other's company. Make it more fun by having a scavenger hunt or creating a nature bingo game. In conclusion, unplugging during family travel doesn't have to be boring or difficult. With a little creativity, you can make lasting memories while disconnecting from the digital world. So next time you hit the road, try some of these unplugged activities and see how much fun you can have!
