Unplugged Adventures: Keeping Kids Entertained on Long Drives

(Deep into the road trip, covered in snacks and clearly needing a break LOL)

Embarking on a family road trip can be an exciting adventure filled with new experiences and memorable moments. However, as any parent knows, keeping kids entertained during long drives without relying on screens can be a daunting task. Fear not! With a bit of creativity and planning, you can turn those hours on the road into quality family time filled with laughter and fun. We just did a 19 hour drive with three kids and a dog, so we had to be prepared. Here are some screen-free activities to keep your little ones entertained and engaged on your next road trip:

1. Create a Road Trip Playlist: Before hitting the road, involve your kids in creating a road trip playlist filled with their favorite songs and sing-along classics. Encourage them to dance, sing, and enjoy the music as you cruise down the highway.

2. Pack a Travel Activity Kit: Fill a backpack or tote bag with a variety of travel-friendly activities such as coloring books, crayons, puzzles, sticker books, and activity books. Include a mix of activities to cater to different interests and age groups.

3. Play Classic Car Games: Bring back the nostalgia of classic car games such as "I Spy," "20 Questions," and the license plate game. These games are not only entertaining but also encourage observation skills and critical thinking.

4. Storytelling: Encourage creativity and imagination by taking turns telling stories or creating a collaborative story together. Start with a simple prompt or theme and let each family member contribute to the story as it unfolds.

5. Audiobooks and Podcasts: Select age-appropriate audiobooks or podcasts that the whole family can enjoy together. Choose from a variety of genres including adventure, mystery, comedy, and educational podcasts that spark curiosity and inspire learning.

6. Snack Time: Keep hunger at bay and satisfy cravings with a selection of healthy and delicious snacks. Pack a mix of fruits, veggies, trail mix, granola bars, and other finger foods that are easy to munch on while on the go.

7. Scavenger Hunt: Create a scavenger hunt checklist featuring items commonly seen on the road such as road signs, landmarks, and vehicle types. Challenge your kids to spot and check off items from the list as you travel.

8. Roadside Attractions: Research fun and quirky roadside attractions along your route and plan pit stops to explore these hidden gems. Whether it's a giant roadside statue, a unique landmark, or a scenic overlook, these unexpected detours add excitement and adventure to your journey. Some of our best stops were the rest stops. The rest stops in the USA are usually full of beautiful green spaces, and walking trails. All of them had areas to walk your pets as well.

9. Interactive Map: Engage your kids in navigation by involving them in map reading and route planning. Provide them with a map or use a GPS device to track your progress and highlight interesting landmarks and points of interest along the way.

10. Car Camping: Turn your vehicle into a cozy haven by setting up a makeshift car camping experience. Bring along blankets, pillows, and sleeping bags for a comfortable nap or relaxation zone during the drive.

Conclusion

With a little creativity and planning, keeping kids entertained on long drives without screens can be a rewarding and enjoyable experience for the whole family. Embrace the opportunity to bond, explore, and create lasting memories together as you embark on your next road trip adventure. Safe travels!
